Alignment with global agendas
The 2030 Agenda and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
Our alignment with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) underscores our commitment to making a tangible impact on both local and global scales.
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is a global framework that seeks to redirect humanity towards a more sustainable, inclusive and equitable future. At the core of the 2030 Agenda are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs identify leading global challenges that are crucial for the survival of humanity and provide guidance and targets for addressing systemic barriers to sustainable development.
Infuse Travel’s travel programs are designed using our Learning Framework, which supports these agendas in multiple ways. First is through our delivery of critical Global Citizenship Education and Education for Sustainable Development.
As UNESCO notes, Education for Sustainable Development makes ‘an essential contribution to all efforts to achieve the SDGs, enabling individuals to contribute to sustainable development by promoting societal, economic and political change as well as by transforming their own behaviour.’
Distilled down, we see that many people want to contribute to positive social and environmental change, but are often unsure where to begin.
At a time when there are more young people in the world than ever before, we see enormous potential in youth becoming leaders of change.
As the most recent United Nations UN World Youth Report states “The active engagement of youth in sustainable development efforts is central to achieving sustainable, inclusive and stable societies.”
Education for Sustainable Development also develops competencies for sustainability that are relevant to all SDGs. Goal 4 – Quality Education, and particularly Target 4.7, most closely aligns with the Learning Framework that we have developed at Infuse Travel.
Infuse’s service projects, fundraising and coalition-building activities make small, but meaningful, contributions to Agenda 2030 and the SDGs. The 5 primary examples of this are:
UNESCO’s Education for Sustainable Development Framework
As the United Nations’ specialised agency for education, UNESCO is entrusted to lead and coordinate the Education 2030 Agenda. UNESCO’s Education for Sustainable Development framework was adopted with the aim of increasing the contribution of education to building a more just and sustainable world.
Infuse Travel draws inspiration from UNESCO’s ESD framework, integrating an action-oriented, innovative, and holistic pedagogy into our programs. This approach empowers learners to actively engage in creating a more sustainable world, fostering a sense of responsibility and awareness.
The role of young people in sustainable development
‘Young people’s empowerment, development and engagement is an end in itself, as well as a means to build a better world.’
United Nations 2018, UN World Youth Report: Youth and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
Recognising the pivotal role of youth in sustainable development, our alignment with the United Nations Youth Strategy’s priorities runs deeply through all our programs.
The first priority of the UN Youth Strategy is ‘Engagement, Participation and Advocacy’, which seeks to “amplify youth voices for the promotion of a peaceful, just and sustainable world.
The second priority is ‘Informed and Healthy Foundations’, which includes support for non-formal education, and “the provision of quality and inclusive education for young people that is learner-centred, adopts a lifelong learning approach… [and] promotes sustainable lifestyles and sustainable development.”
Both of these priorities have strong alignment with our own approach to learning and teaching, including our commitment to work with and support youth-led organisations, networks and movements, as well as young people outside of organisations.
