Ancient Cultures & Coral Coasts – Western Australia

This program will take you into the East Pilbara on the ultimate Western Australia (WA) school excursion. You will connect with the Martu people, one of the last Aboriginal groups to emerge out of the desert. Learn about life in this remote region of Australia. Support local people through service projects. Help enrich the lives of Aboriginal children through a range of cross-cultural activities. Explore Karijini National Park to hike gorges and swim in waterholes. Then, road trip across WA to the Indian Ocean to discover Coral Bay and Ningaloo Reef!

Highlights

Discover one of the world’s oldest living cultures. Some Martu people in the western deserts did not have contact with European’s until the 1960’s.

Interact with Martu youth. Assist with enrichment activities to support youth development and education.

Explore diverse geographical landscapes. Hike the red-rock gorges of Karrijini and swim under waterfalls in turquoise pools.

Snorkel with manta rays and turtles on the magnificent coral reefs of Ningaloo.

Road trip ‘off the map’ through Western Australia.

Sample Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival into Perth

Infused’ staff will greet you with a warm welcome on arrival for your WA School Excursion. This afternoon will be spent around Perth and Fremantle. First you’ll have an orientation to the program and settle into your hostel. Then we’ll head to the famous Cottesloe Beach for a swim. We’ll finish the day with a fish and chip dinner while watching the sun set over the Indian Ocean.

Day 2 - Perth to Newman

This morning we begin our journey to the Pilbara! Our flight will take us about 1000km northeast to Newman, a remote mining town in the vast desert outback of WA. This is the beginning of our outback adventure experience! Here you’ll be introduced to a local indigenous community.

Day 3 - Mining, Native Title and Cultural Awareness

Visit BHP’s Mount Whaleback mine, one of Australia’s largest open cut mines. Here you’ll learn about the process of mining iron ore and how it is transported by rail to Port Hedland for shipment. Spend the remainder of the day meeting local community leaders. Deepen your understanding of the complexities of life in the Pilbara and the impact of competing value systems.

Day 4 - Community Projects

Support community projects with one or more of Infused’ community partners. You may be helping to run after school activities at the youth centre or supporting the elderly. Alternatively you might be helping local Martu people with gardening and maintenance at the Martu Farm. This is an initiative of the charity Red Dirt, Blue Sky.

Days 5 & 6 - Community Engagement

Visit a remote community to participate in shared learning activities with Martu youth and elders. Deepen your understanding of Aboriginal Australia by engaging with local people. Share stories and learn what it’s like to live in such a remote location. Create and implement games and activities for local students. Also, prepare and share meals with the community.

Day 7 - Karijini National Park

Say goodbye to Newman before hitting the road to Karijini National Park. Here you will explore and adventure through rugged landscapes, stunning gorges, breathtaking waterfalls and sparkling rockpools. Enjoy the afternoon exploring and swimming at Fortescue Falls and Fern Pool. This evening you will experience one of the most stunning night skies as you stargaze with your friends.

Day 8 - Gorges & Waterfalls

Wake up to the sounds of the birds and the smells of the wildflowers. Today we venture to Knox Gorge as well as Oxers lookout and Kermits pool with a 90ft waterfall and many natural wonders in between.

Day 9 - Road Trip

Head to one of the most amazing coastlines in the world and the world-famous Ningaloo Reef. Ningaloo is a UNESCO World Heritage listed site. It’s also the only place on earth where you can access a large, biodiverse coral reef so easily. Your destination is the coastal town of Coral Bay. Coral Bay is full of turquoise blue waters, coral reefs, an abundance of marine life and nesting turtles!

Day 10 - Snorkel Ningaloo Reef & Swim with Manta Rays

Head out on a boat to explore the spectacular Ningaloo Reef on a snorkelling expedition like no other. This coral reef is world famous with thousands of marine species to discover. While you snorkel look out for manta rays, turtles, fish, dugong and colourful coral.

Day 11 - Departure

Today we’ll make our way to Exmouth to check you in for your flight home. Safe travels!
