Aboriginal Cultural Immersions

“A trip to the NT with the entire Year 10 cohort is a brilliant reminder that a holistic education goes far beyond the classroom walls. Taking both students and teachers alike out of their comfort zone is an integral part of student development. From being On-Country and learning the ways of our First Nations’ people, to exploring the vast beauty of the Northern Territory, these are the experiences that make school memorable.”

Lead Teacher, Mentone Girls Grammar School

“My overall experience of working with Infuse on our Top End programs has been exceptional! I will be taking another group of students for the third time this year. I have found it a highly valuable experience, both personally, and for the students we take each year.”

Jane Lowe, Teacher, Leader of Learning, Chevalier College

“Learning about Indigenous culture and law specifically ‘women’s business’ was another significant moment for me, my heart was opened, my mind expanded and I learnt so much. The opportunity to be welcomed to country with a smoking ceremony, to sit around and prepare food and learn from the elders was eye opening. It changed my understanding especially around Indigenous stereotypes and myths that exist.”

Mackenzie Edwards, Student, Chevalier College, Epic Outback Experience

“Absolutely love working with Alanah (Infuse Travel Outback Manager). Her patience with assisting with all our concerns and queries is amazing. Her professional knowledge and ability to accommodate our personal college requirements is much appreciated. Cannot ask for a better coordinator to work with moving forward in the future. Alanah constantly wants the best for us and will assist us in ensuring the experience is everything we want and so much more. Can't rate Alanah highly enough.”

Marie Manning, Teacher, St Clare’s College

The Top End

The Top End

Our Northern Territory Aboriginal tours immerse students in diverse Aboriginal cultures through meaningful community connections. We have a longstanding relationship with a Limilngan–Wulna family from the Adelaide River region, allowing students to visit their Aboriginal cultural centre and engage deeply with their traditions.

Some programs also explore Arnhem Land, where students visit the Injalak Arts Centre and interact with Kunwinjku, Mengerrdji and Erre artists, learning about the cultural stories that inspire their art. Many tours include Kakadu National Park, where students are guided by Bininj or Mungguy people, discovering their strong ties to the land and how they preserve their cultural heritage. These experiences provide students with invaluable insights into Aboriginal culture and traditions.

The East Kimberley

The East Kimberley

The beautifully wild and remote East Kimberley offers students a one-of-a-kind Aboriginal Cultural Immersion, particularly through interactions with the Miriwoong and Gajirrabeng People, the Traditional Owners of Kununurra. Infuse Travel’s programs incorporate language lessons with Elders, visits to culturally significant sites, and community service projects with local Aboriginal organisations.

Another highlight is a visit to Billiluna, where students learn about Aboriginal culture and daily life through activities such as hunting and gathering bush tucker, listening to Dreamtime stories, following Songlines, and camping On Country. These genuine, unscripted experiences foster deep cross-cultural connections with Elders and community members.

The Pilbara is one of the largest regions in Western Australia. It is an extraordinary place that is sure to captivate you and leave a lasting memory. Known for its rugged gorges and beautiful National Parks, the Pilbara is home to the Martu people, one of the last Indigenous people to come in contact with European Settlers.

With a deep connection to land, hear their stories firsthand and learn what life was like then and now. Infuse teams will explore Karijini National Park to hike gorges and swim in waterholes. From here, teams can roadtrip across WA to the Indian Ocean to discover Coral Bay and Ningaloo Reef!

The Dampier Peninsula

The Dampier Peninsula, home to the Bardi people, or “Salt Water People,” is a stunning destination for Infuse Travel’s Aboriginal Cultural Immersions. This coastal region features Kooljaman, where red cliffs meet white sandy beaches and clear waters.

Visitors can explore the Bardi people’s maritime traditions through mud crab tours with local families, learning traditional fishing methods. The waters of Cape Leveque are ideal for kayaking, snorkelling, and encountering diverse marine life. Pender Bay, part of the World Heritage-listed Kimberley coastline, offers prime whale watching during migration. Central to preserving this culturally significant area are the Bardi Jawi Rangers, who protect both land and sea for future generations.

Some of our Traditional Owner Partners

Joseph (Dingo) Parry and Lucy Carlingung

Location: Woodycupaldiya, NT

Jo and Lucy have lived On Country in Woodycupaldiya, west of the Daly River in the Northern Territory all their lives. Driven by a vision to provide a better future for their children and grandchildren, they have faced the challenges of living in a remote area that is cut off from major towns during the wet season. Since joining forces with Infuse Travel, Jo and Lucy have started welcoming student visitors, and nearly two years later, they have developed accommodation, showers, toilets and a viewing platform on their property.

How we support Traditional Owners

Hosting groups On Country

An integral part of Infuse Aboriginal Cultural Immersions is working side by side with Traditional Owners to listen, identify community development opportunities and build genuine, long standing friendships. Infuse Travel supports Traditional Owners in the following ways:

  • Nurturing long standing partnerships including genuine friendships with Traditional Owners built on trust and shared mission, vision and values.
  • We do not use scripts or requests for what is to be shared or taught to students, rather we empower Traditional Owners to share their own truth and authenticity On Country.
  • Contribute to keeping Culture and Country strong by providing space for intergenerational transfer of knowledge through employment and facilitation of Cultural Immersions.
  • Support business development via service projects that assist with resources, and by providing hands-on labour at homelands identified and requested by Traditional Owners.
  • Walk together with Traditional Owners to navigate walking, learning and teaching cross-culturally in two worlds, both traditional and Western. This involves spending time learning about current western education systems, structures and values and collaborating with Traditional Owners to develop and maintain cultural safety within our pre/post departure learning material and across all Immersions.
  • We do not speak on behalf of Traditional Owners but have the training and cultural awareness to stand side by side with them during facilitation and support as required.
  • Ongoing consultation to review Immersion relevance, strengths and needs.
Why prioritise Aboriginal Cultural Immersions?
Icon

Recognise the world’s oldest culture

Australia has an incredibly rich Indigenous history and culture that spans over 65,000 years. It is the world’s oldest continuous living culture! Engaging with Aboriginal Australians helps students understand and recognise the concepts of Country, Place and People and how they are interconnected. Cultural Immersions also offer students an understanding of the historic and contemporary implications of colonisation.

Icon

Appreciate knowledge systems

The cross-curriculum educational priority of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures encourages students to value First Nations knowledge systems. It also teaches them to appreciate First Nations contributions to Australian society over time. Learning about all facets of Aboriginal history and culture allows students to not only develop respect for cultural diversity, but to gain a well-rounded perspective of Australia’s history.

Icon

Empathy for Reconciliation

Empathy is an extremely powerful emotion that is fundamental in reaching reconciliation. Engaging in Aboriginal education promotes the closing of the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians in many areas, including educational achievement, employment opportunities and life expectancy. When students can develop an understanding of why cultures differ it encourages appreciation for diversity.

Learning from Aboriginal Program Leaders

Liam Lannigan

Program Leader

Liam Lannigan, a Jaru man from Halls Creek in the East Kimberley, is an integral part of the Infuse family. Liam joined Infuse in 2014 and has been working as a Program Leader with us ever since. Growing up in Halls Creek and completing his secondary schooling in Perth, Liam works as a Program Leader on our outback programs, providing local knowledge. Liam loves sharing his story with students, and loves to learn about the students’ cultures and compare them with his own. He is also very generous in the way he shares stories of Aboriginal history and culture with school teams.

Our Year 9 students were fortunate enough to spend 10 unforgettable days exploring Central Australia for their annual camp. On Country on Indigenous Land, the girls were quick to immerse themselves in the local community and jump straight into all the activities on offer.

From camel rides at sunset, to hikes through majestic gorges and scenic walks, visiting local schools and community centres, traditional dot painting with a local Indigenous Leader, sleeping under the stars and witnessing mesmerising sunsets at Uluru, our students made the most of every moment, fully engaging with the diverse culture and stunning landscapes of Australia's heartland.

We also offer Aboriginal cultural experiences in Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales as part of our range of Service Learning Programs.

In Aboriginal culture, rather than viewing Country or land as a physical environment, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people consider Country as a deeply symbolic and spiritual place. The connection between person and Country reinforces Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' identity and sense of belonging. An Aboriginal On Country experience is an immersive journey where students are welcomed into culturally significant areas under the guidance of local Aboriginal Elders, families and community members.

This unique and special experience allows students to connect directly with the land, learn traditional practices and hear stories passed down through generations.
