Toorak College Year 8 Camp, Surf Coast
In 2024, Toorak College embarked on an exciting partnership with Infuse Travel to deliver an immersive Outdoor Education program for their Year 8 cohort. The aim of the program was to build on the foundational outdoor skills students had developed in Year 7, while introducing them to new activities and fostering a stronger sense of community within the group. Infuse Travel worked closely with Toorak College to craft an experience that not only challenged students physically but also contributed to their personal growth and socio-emotional learning.
Program Overview
The program was based on the iconic Surf Coast, offering a blend of structured learning and adventure in one of Victoria’s most breathtaking natural environments. Set at a private campsite along the Great Ocean Road, the students spent two nights in cabins, followed by two nights camping in tents during a multi-day hiking expedition.

Program Highlights
- Hiking: Students hiked along the stunning Surf Coast Walk, taking in the impressive coastline and learning about sustainable practices in the natural environment.
- Surfing & SUP: Through hands-on lessons in surfing and stand-up paddle boarding, students developed new skills and experienced the thrill of water-based activities.
- Mountain biking: Students participated in mountain biking sessions, pushing their physical limits while enjoying the scenic surroundings.
- Overnight expedition: The multi-day camping experience taught students vital outdoor living skills, including how to set up camp, cook in the wilderness and navigate the outdoors.
Learning Intentions
The program was designed with clear educational objectives to enhance students' personal and social development. Key learning outcomes included:
- Socio-emotional learning: The program aimed to build self-confidence, perseverance, and foster life-long friendships.
- Personal growth: Students gained a better understanding of themselves, their peers, and the environment, expanding their perspectives beyond their immediate community.
- Community building: The shared experiences during the program were essential in fostering a strong sense of camaraderie within the Year 8 cohort.
- Personal responsibility: Students were encouraged to take ownership of their actions and learn self-reliance in a team environment.
- Environmental stewardship: A significant focus was placed on helping students understand their role in contributing to a sustainable future.
The partnership between Toorak College and Infuse Travel successfully delivered a well-rounded, enriching outdoor education experience. Through the varied activities and challenges, students not only learned essential outdoor skills but also developed key life skills that will serve them in the future. This journey on the Surf Coast provided a unique opportunity for personal discovery, fostering a sense of responsibility and community.
