Meet your local leaders on arrival into Johannesburg and take part in a brief orientation before beginning the six hour journey to the Ezulwini Valley. Known as the Valley of Heaven, this lush region introduces you to the culture, scenery and warmth Eswatini is known for. Settle into camp and rest after the travel day.

Ease into expedition life with a day exploring the valley’s cultural hubs, craft markets and nearby walking trails. Visit Mantenga Cultural Village in the afternoon where traditional dance, drumming and storytelling bring centuries-old customs to life. Wander to Mantenga Falls with your local guide and get familiar with everyday siSwati greetings, currency and customs.

Travel west to your rural community site and settle into village life. Over the next few days you will support a Neighbourhood Care Point that provides meals, early learning and safe spaces for local children. Work alongside community members on basic infrastructure, assist with daily operations and participate in workshops that teach traditional skills such as lutindzi weaving.

Meals are cooked over open fires, bucket showers keep you refreshed and each night you fall asleep to the sounds of village life settling around you. By the end of this section, students have built strong cross-cultural connections and a grounded appreciation for everyday life in rural Eswatini.

Farewell your community hosts and make a stop at Swazi Candles to watch artisans shape vivid wax creations. Continue on to Hlane Royal National Park, home to Eswatini’s largest concentrations of lions, elephants and both black and white rhinoceros.

Settle into your camp beside a floodlit waterhole and wake early for a sunrise game drive. Witness predators on the move, rhinos grazing in the morning light and herds gathering at the water’s edge. An optional sunset game drive offers another chance to observe wildlife and learn about local conservation efforts.

Begin the three day trek into Ngwempisi Gorge, a rugged wilderness carved by river valleys and steep forested walls. Descend into the gorge and follow the river through remote landscapes and scattered homesteads. Camp on sandy riverbanks or under forest canopies and cook dinner over campfires as the stars appear.

The final day brings a steep ascent up the gorge wall. Reach Rock Lodge, perched high above the valley, and take in sweeping views that celebrate the challenge you have completed.

Watch the gorge glow at sunrise before the last climb out to your awaiting vehicle. Return to the Ezulwini Valley and settle into Lidwala Lodge. Spend the afternoon choosing your own adventure: hike Sheba’s Breasts, browse local craft markets or relax by the pool.

The next day, take a highlights tour of the region. Visit Sibebe Rock, explore the scenic Maguga Dam and stop at Ngwenya Glass where recycled glass is transformed into striking art pieces. Return to camp for your final night and take part in a facilitated reflection session that helps students process their learning and prepare to share their experiences back home.

Travel back to Johannesburg and begin your journey home after two weeks of challenge, cultural exchange and adventure. Say farewell to your local leaders and board your flight.
